2007 Frankfort motorcycle trip
Day 3

August 19

I awoke around 7:30. I could hear Ashton rustling around then she went to John & Debby's room. I got up, got dressed, and packed up my things. At 8:30 we met for breakfast at the hotel restaurant and had the breakfast buffet again. It was just as good the second day. After breakfast we adjourned to the plaza to smoke some fine tobacco and discuss our next plan.

We decided to visit Daniel Boone's gravesite at the Frankfort Cemetery. It was a short drive up US60 past the military history museum we visited yesterday.

The view from Daniel Boone's grave.

Daniel & Rebecca Boone's grave.

The view of Frankfort from his gravesite is beautiful. You can see the river winding through the hills surrounding Frankfort. It's easy to picture him standing here with his Kentucky rifle and coonskin cap talking to Mingo about his explorations. Does he look like Fess Parker in your imagination?

We spent nearly an hour wandering the cemetery looking at the historic tombstones of the famous and the forgotten. A waterline had broken on US60 and the police had the road blocked, so we took an alternate route from the cemetery. Once again we found ourselves on the 'Tail of the Possum'. We arrived at Rebecca Ruth's candy store to find it didn't open until noon. It was 10:30. The capital building didn't open until 1:00, so we decided to start our trip home and spend some time in Madison, Indiana.

US421 is a nice highway to ride. When you see a band of sportbikes pulled off at the end of the road you know some good riding lies ahead. We stopped to get something to drink only to find out the store above was closed. At least the name is cool.

Several miles up the road we came upon a fresh motorcycle wreck. A guy on an Ultra Classic was going too fast on a downhill turn, locked the brakes, and went off the road. He must have had an angel looking out for him. He wasn't wearing a helmet and all he had was a scratch on his head and a sore shoulder. The group of riders were from the Indianapolis area...fellow Hoosiers. After the first firefighter arrived on scene we took off to lessen the congestion. As we continued north we passed firefighters, KSP, a fire truck, and an ambulance headed for the scene. As a volunteer firefighter it felt a little odd to be going away from a wreck...but I'm on vacation and the rider was in good hands.

We pulled over in Pleasureville to get something to drink. As we sat there the fire truck and ambulance came back through town. The rider must have refused treatment. Hopefully his bike was rideable. Mike got a $2 winning lottery ticket but the store was unable to cash it due to equipment malfunction.

I-71 & US421 interchange. 12:17, mileage 8838 - We stopped up the road for gas and Mike was able to get his money.

As I was rounding the turn to cross the bridge into Madison I noticed in my mirror that John was turning into a souvenior store. Mike and I continued across the bridge and came back. This way Lisa, who doesn't like heights, got to cross the bridge three times.

We scored big in the store. We found state pins for all the states we had ridden in since we began our trips in 2004...Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina. They were out of Kentucky pins, and since Mike didn't pick one up last year in Bardstown his search continues.

After crossing into Madison we parked downtown and walked up the street to Subway. Walking in the Frankfort cemetery and riding 60 scenic miles had made us hungry.

After eating we decided to tour the Lanier Mansion. It is located near the river. While waiting for the tour to start we saw a groundhog.

Following the tour we hopped on the bikes we rode out of town on SR56 to SR256. A few miles down the road we stopped in Kent for another pop break. Then it was back on the road until we were at John & Debby's house.

Bedford, IN. 17:45, ending mileage is 8937 - Another nice trip was at its end. We saw a lot of interesting sights. There was no rain, no breakdowns, and Ashton got to go on another trip. We broke tradition this year and didn't go to a KFC. We only saw a couple Goldwings this trip.

We're already talking about another weekender sometime in October. We might go back to Buffalo Trace for a private tour of the whole distillery. We might go to Lawrenceburg to a distillery there and check out some mansions. Whenever and whereever, we're already looking forward to it.

129 scenic miles.

See You on the Highway.
